Nearly 60 percent of Americans haven't made a will

A 2017 study by Caring.com demonstrates how unprepared most Americans are for their end of life. Over half of all Americans reported no will or estate plan in place.

The number of people without a will increased the younger the population. Over 70 percent of millennials ages 18-36 have no plans in place. That number drops slightly to 64 percent of people ages 37-52.

The most alarming statistic discovered by the survey was that 64 percent of parents with children under 18 have no end-of-life plans in place.

This is a huge oversight.

Without a will in place, there is no way of assigning legal guardians to your children. Parents should have clear guardianship instructions for any children at the very minimum.

If you don't have a will, the state of Texas tries to act in the best interests of any children. They will also distribute assets based on who is related to you.

Wills aren't just for people with a lot of assets or vast estates.

Clear instructions help loved ones make hard decisions and makes a stressful time a little less so. Even younger Americans with few assets can benefit from planning a will.

While no one wants to consider their mortality, having a will in place is the responsible choice for Americans of all ages.

An attorney specializing in estate law can help you create an estate plan that fits your lifestyle, and answer any questions you may have throughout the process.
